Test Shoots

This section is for my own personal log of tests that I decided to record. All videos of test shoots are listed below.

If you watch any of the below videos and see something wrong, and happen to know why, please point it out to me! My email address is jackery@jackery.com. I am an armature and am always learning, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Update May 22 2005 - Added the following: 0001-0030 rocket videos, added some fountains, added some candles, buzzbombs, misc, smoke bombs, strobes, etc. (41 new videos)

Misc:

Ceda's racecar sparkler - Download the qt version.
Naphthalene Charge #1 - Made from a box with 10oz naphthalene in it and greenmix to get everything going. Tested mid February, 2005.

Scare the shit out of Kyle - The picture on this video is not very good. This video was not filmed in the US. Kyle and I were in Belgium and we made a rocket with a Degn green flash salute at the end. The rocket failed about 50 feet up, shooting the green salute another 20 feet up. You can hear me telling Kyle to run back to the car, second later the salute blows up about 25 feet from Kyle, and about 25 feet in the sky, a safe distance, but it scared the shit out of him nonetheless. Micromines:

Green MicroMine #1 - These always turn out so wonderful. A perfect shoot.
Red MicroMine #1 - Video taken from too far away, lift charge not large enough or wadding too tight. It's a rare occasion that these don't turn out perfect.

Spinners/Hummers/Anything Spinny:

Little Buzz Bomb - A tiny buzz bomb. Download the quicktime version.
Buzz Bomb - Very small tube, got nice height for tube size. Download the quicktime version.
Blurry Buzzbomb - Camera had a little difficulty focusing. Download the quicktime version.
Helicopter - Didn't catch the end of the flight. Daytime shoot. Watch me run like a girl! I gotta start wearing shoes. Download the quicktime version.
Daytime Spinner - Hard to see, done in the daytime as a test. Download the quicktime version.
Ti Spinner - Spinner with titanium 100 mesh. Download the quicktime version.
Spinner - A ground spinner at night. Download the quicktime version.
Spinner #1 - Small spinner with VERY hot mix, spins very fast and is loud but does not last long.
Flying Hummer - This is a daytime shoot of a little test hummer that flew up into the air. The video didn't capture it very well, because I was trying to avoid it, but it hovered in the air for a few seconds. Download the quicktime version.
Fe Spinner - This is a standard Iron spinner. It was ignited while sitting on a sloped piece of wood to encourage spinning. Download the quicktime version.

Fountains:

Red Ti Fountain - Ran out of fuses (-: Don't try this yourself. Download the quicktime version.
Fountain with small crackling microstars - I don't really like this effect /-:. Download the quicktime version.
Green Fountain w/Burn Through - Lit off at Tijana's house. The flame burned through the case. Download the QT version.
Crackling Microstars Fountain - I don't like the way these work in fountains; the roar of the fountains overpowers the crackling effect. Download the QT version.
Blue Steel/Ti - A blue fountain alternating between Ti and steel. Download the quicktime version
Green Test Fountain - This was a test of a tweaked green composition, formulary ID #870. Worked well, burned a little hot though. Download the quicktime version.
Green Fountain - A larger fountain, made out of the above composition. This contained crackling microstars, but they didn't work )-: Must not be compatible with this matrix. Download the quicktime version.
Blue Steel Test - A test of the blue steel comp. Worked, well. Could use a little more blue, but blue is not something to be greedy with (-: Download the quicktime version.
Blue Steel - I heard these things have a nasty habit of blowing up. It blew up (-: Download the quicktime version.
Fountain w/Red Ministars - Worked very well. Download the quicktime version.
Fountain w/Blue Ministars - This is just a clip of the fountains entire performance. Reached very high heights, this video was taken from far away.
Fountain w/Red and Blue Ministars - This fountain was mediocre in performance. Download the quicktime version.
Burst Fountain w/Blue Ministars - Very weak in performance. The stars were to big for the nozzle. Download the quicktime version.
Iron Burst Fountain - Not very long lasting. Huge bursts. Download the quicktime version.
Rob's Red Ti Fountain - This formula is great. It burns real hot and will eat right through your tube, but it has a long burn time and a great color. Download the quicktime version.
Smaller Version of Rob's Red Ti Fountain - This is a smaller version of the previous red Ti fountain. It is a thin walled 3/4" ID x 3" long tube. Download the quicktime version.
Fountain Jam Packed with Ti - Tijana filmed this one, so don't blame me for the odd angle (-: This is a very generic, yet nice fountain. Download the quicktime version.
Failed Rob's Red Ti Fountain - This is what happens when the tube gets burned through very early. This was a 1" ID 1/4" walled tube. It burned through very early. Download the quicktime version.
Fountain 8 - Looks like Rob's Red Ti fountain. Download the quicktime version.

Firecrackers:

Blowin' Up Fruit - The cabbage was blown apart nicely, but about 1/2 was left in tact on the blast area. The orange and sugar behaved as planned. The watermelon absorbed most of the shock while suffering little noticeable exterior damage but showing much evidence of the blast upon further inspection. Download the quicktime version.
LeafCracker - Unfortunately it was too dark to see us making this. A firecracker made out of a leaf of ivy explodes quite violently. Download the quicktime version.
Green Firecracker - Made with Degn's green flash powder and lit under water. You can see the flash is green. Download the quicktime version.
Huge Belgium Salute - A salute some friends and I made in Belgium. It could be heard a great distance away. Download the quicktime version.

Candles:

Silver Candle - Download the quicktime version.
Rapid zinc spreader star candle - Listen to the commentary (-: Download the quicktime version.
Handheld White Candle - A handheld candle with silver sparkle stars. Download the QT version.
Handheld Silver Candle - Neat perspective, I was holding and filming at the same time. Download the QT version.
Handheld Red Candle - Kyle was holding it. The timing wasn't very good, it kind of rapid fired. Download the QT version.
Silver Candle - A silver candle. Download QT ver.
Color Candle - This candle was made with a bunch of different colors, followed by a chrysanthemum at the end. Neat effect! Download the quicktime version.
Color Candle 2 - Same as the above, but with one more shot. Download the quicktime version.
Silver Handheld Candle - We didn't hold it, but rather pointed it at a 45 degree angle towards the camera. Worked nicely, a couple of stars flew blind. Download the quicktime version.
Barrage of Candles - Before - During - Four silver star candles quickmatched together with sticky match. Worked nicely, timing was thrown off after a few shots, needs more passfire bp. Download the quicktime version Before/During.
Silver Break Candle - First two shots were rammed hard (deliberately) to break the stars, having a break effect. Download the quicktime version.
Silver Candle - Same as above but without ramming the stars hard. Download the quicktime version.
4 Shot Blue Candle - Tijana didn't capture the stars hovering in the air, but you can see one that fell to the ground. You can get an idea of how these are timed. This was made using the method that will be outlined in the project section. Download the quicktime version.

Rocket with Report - This rocket had no passfire between fuel and report. Result is a rocket that reports at a low altitude. Inspired from laziness (-: Download the quicktime version.

Whistles:

Weiner Whistle 1 - A nerdy whistle that was picked on when it was a kid. Download the quicktime version.
Weiner Whistle 2 - The above's equally nerdy girlfriend. Download the quicktime version.
Cool Exploding Whistle - This was a dud, but made a neat boom (-: Download the quicktime version.
Small Whistle - This whistle had maybe 1.5cm of charge in a .75" ID tube. Worked nicely, particle size of ingredients was -100mesh. Download the quicktime version.
Dud Whistle - This whistle had a full charge and was made to demonstrate what can go wrong. Particle breakdown of sodium benzoate is 10% -100mesh, 60% -60mesh, and 30% -20mesh. I made one section near the beginning of ramming too large so it would explode, it did. Download the quicktime version.

Smoke:

HCE Smoke Bomb - One of the ones made in the demonstration. A small tube produces a GREAT deal of smoke (-:. Download the QT version.
Purple Smoke Bomb - Nuttin' Special, just a purple smoke bomb like the ones made in the project page. Download the quicktime version.
Double Smoke - Green and purple, made like the ones in the howto. They burned a little too hot at first, and then cooled to the correct temperature. Download the quicktime version.
Green Smoke Test - Longer burning than in the howto, but doesn't produce as great a volume of smoke. Download the quicktime version.
KNO3/Sugar Smoke Bomb - Courtesy of Max from the UK. I have heard a lot about kno3/sugar smoke bombs but never seen footage of one, upon request Max sent me a video of a 320 gram KNO3/Sugar bomb in action.

Crackle Balls:

Strobes:

Quickmatched Strobes - Needed to get rid of these annoying things, so I quickmatched some together. Download the QT version.
White Strobe - Not as bright as the red ones. Download the QT version.
Red Strobe - These are so annoying! Download the quicktime version.
Red Strobe 1 - A Shimizu red star formula put into a strobe pot. This and #2 were made in the howto. Download the quicktime version.

Tijana's Party:

Tijana had a party last night (April 02, 2005). I had about half an hour to throw together some small ground fireworks to play with. Nothing big because of the area we had to light them in. I made a bunch of little mines, a few candles, and some fountains.

Mines - A series of mines all put together in one video. I made green micromines and yellow, red, blue and orange mini mines. The orange mines used a simple calcium carbonate formula with parlon substituted for PVC, the yellow used a cryolite formula with the same substitution, the red was an organic red Bleser formula using strontium carbonate, the blue was a Shimizu formula using copper carbonate. Fountains - Three of Rob's red Ti fountains. I can't get enough of these (-: Download the quicktime version.
Candles - Three multi colored candles. Containing all or some of the following: Silver stars (my own formula with fine flitters for brightness and 325 mesh atomized spherical al for spark trail, KClO4 as the oxidizer). Red organic Bleser stars (SrCO3). Blue Shimizu (CuCO3). Yellow and Orange stars with CaCO3 and Cryolite with a parlon substitution for the PVC. Jolly Ranchers - After all the fireworks were done we launched some candy into the air with the mortars and some cannon powder (-: Download the quicktime version.
